Managing your files is nothing what it used to be before Windows came out and made it easy for all of us. During the reign of DOS, if you did not know where you put a file it would take you approximately thirty minutes to find what it was you forgot you were looking for after you went through all your cheat-sheets on how to find C://This/That/Word/Etc…
Nonetheless, knowing where you put a file is still a big time saver. If you don’t already do it, you should make a File Folder for all the similar topics in which you are working on. For example, if you run a business out of your home and keep a record of all your household bills all on the same computer you may want to pay attention to this.
Here is where you have opportunity to spend your money on a Program
that will do it for you or you could simply apply yourself and organize your thoughts. To do this what I suggest you do is think of your PC as a file cabinet. Microsoft has provided a “main” folder called My Documents. Here is a great place to have your virtual file cabinet. Within My Documents, create a folder and put a name on it (lets say… business). Close that folder and crate a new folder, name that folder (lets say… home) and close this folder.
Now go back to the folder in My Documents called Business and open it. Once it is open, create a new folder and name it (lets say… bills).Do the same thing for your file called Home. go back to the folder in My Documents called Home and open it. Once it is open, create a new folder and name it (lets say… bills).
Using what you have already paid for, you are able to quickly find what you need without searching your hard-drive franticly. All it took was a little time and some basic organization skills.
You may say, yeah but I can just as well go to the Start button and click on the find button and find everything I want and all I have to do is type in whatever I want to find... yes you are correct, but remember this: never use the same title for any folder on your system, because the likelihood of confusion increases with each file you create and for those of us without a photographic memory remembering 10,000 file names tends to present a problem. As I said before, the choice is yours, so make it a good one.
Good Luck and good surfing!
